Cerebral Palsy Treatment Dramatically Enhanced with Acupuncture

New research supports an already large amount of data accumulated over many decades which points to the dramatic utility of acupuncture therapy for those living with cerebral palsy. An article reviewing a few of these studies can be seen here:
Adding "these two acupuncture protocols to conventional rehabilitative training increased the effective rate of medical care from 55% for children receiving only rehabilitative training to 87% for children receiving both acupuncture and rehabilitative training. The results tested for increases in motor function, improvements in development and improvements in the brain. CT (CAT Scan) and MRI neuroimaging confirmed that acupuncture enhanced improvements in anatomical structures in the brain. These improvements were higher in the acupuncture group than in the control group receiving only the rehabilitative care."
Acupuncturists are often called upon to treat not only cerebral palsy but also many other neurological disease, many of which respond quite well.

Sex Drive, Performance Strengthened by Chinese Medicine Despite Anti-Depressant Use

Several separate studies, at the Universities of Nevada and Montana, as well as Henry Ford Hospital in Michigan have supported the assertion that acupuncture and Chinese medical herbology are very useful in treating the lowered libido and erectile difficulties which often plague those using antidepressant medications. While the studies showed that this was true across the board, regardless of whether the patient was using the pharmaceuticals, the effect was especially marked when it manifested as a drug side effect. An article summarizing the studies can be read here:

The researchers measured significant improvements in sexual function for both the male and female groups in the study. They noted that, “This study suggests a potential role for acupuncture in the treatment of the sexual side-effects of SSRIs and SNRIs as well for a potential benefit of integrating medical and complementary and alternative practitioners.” These findings are consistent with other research. Researchers from the University of Nevada and Montana State University conclude that acupuncture is “effective for reducing some FSD (female sexual dysfunction) problems….”

Here at the Northside Holistic Center we treat a wider variety of drug side effects daily and the sexual side effects of the mood enhancing drugs are usually extremely responsive to treatment in both men and women. Beyond that, I also see many cases of erectile dysfunction, in men, and lowered libido in both genders which are not necessarily linked to the use of the pharmaceuticals. These cases almost invariably respond very well to treatment.

Eye Inflammation Responds to Acupuncture Therapy

Using laser-powered instrumentation, a small University of Vienna study provided support for the use of acupuncture to reduced the pain and inflammation of uveitis, an uncomfortable swelling of the eye. All participants also noted an increase in visual acuity. A summary of the study can be read here:

The pain and inflammation of uveitis are much reduced by acupuncture, according to a small study.
Uveitis is an inflammation of the uvea, one of the layers of tissue within the eye. It causes pain, blurred vision and, left untreated, may even lead to blindness.

MRI Shows that Acupoints Posess Organ Specific Properties.

No acupuncturist would need this sort of validation but this is an important step toward the continual evolution of biomedical acceptance toward Chinese medicine as a valuable and, more importantly, an accurate healing modality.

MRI studies from both the University of California, Irvine and from Japan, found that treating acupoints which are known in acupuncture theory to hone to organs in the body, actually do just this. In these research publications, MRIs were able to demonstrate gastric and heart responses to acupuncture stimulation of the respective points. You can read about these studies here. An excerpt:

This is the latest in a series of investigations proving that specific acupuncture points have specific effects. In a related MRI acupuncture study, investigators note that acupuncture “induce(s) different cerebral glucose metabolism changes in pain-related brain regions and reduce(s) intensity of pain” for patients with migraines. PET-CT neuro-imaging (positron emission tomography - computed tomography) revealed that the choice of acupuncture points used determines exact changes in brain glycometabolism in specific regions of the brain.

Recent evidence shows that stimulation of different points on the body causes distinct responses in hemodynamic, fMRI and central neural electro physiological responses.” The investigators reviewed MRI results and noted that “stimulation of different sets of acupoints leads to disease-specific neuronal responses, even when acupoints are located within the same spinal segment.”
